Protecting Your Homeschool

Since its inception over 30 years ago, HSLDA Canada’s mission has been to help our members protect their homeschool. Though home education is increasingly recognized as a valuable educational option, we regularly hear from Canadian homeschool parents who continue to meet various challenges. Nine times out of ten, the people who call us seeking legal assistance are not people who ever expected to have to speak to a lawyer about homeschooling. They are just regular homeschoolers who — sometimes suddenly — find themselves in a situation they can’t handle on their own. 

We are available to talk with our members about these situations – not only how to deal with them but how to avoid them in the first place. We can highlight issues unique to the homeschooling community, discuss how to recognize a problem developing, and instruct on when to call us.

We hope to encourage our members to:

1. Be conscious of when your family’s specific circumstances increase the chances that your homeschooling may be questioned or investigated.
2. Consider what preparatory steps you can take to ensure you could calmly and confidently defend your homeschool when being questioned or investigated, should it ever happen. Think ahead, work out a plan in case a problem does develop, and be smart about how you communicate with others who may impact your situation (i.e., therapists, social workers, or medical professionals).
