Homeschooling on Prince Edward Island
While Prince Edward Island (PEI) is Canada’s smallest province, it is not lacking in opportunities for homeschoolers! Whether you are looking for a committed group like a co-op, a regular activity like weekly local skating, or just occasional meet-ups, you can find it here on the island!
I have had the unique experience to have lived in four communities spanning three different provinces while homeschooling my daughters. All experiences have been wonderful, but unique in services and opportunities available, as well as proximity to fellow home educators.
Homeschooling on PEI has provided us an abundance of opportunities, so many that it’s impossible to do them all! There really is something for every homeschooler here. It is so nice not to feel isolated in your education choices and to have a community around you.
While there is not a provincial association at the time of writing (early 2026), there are still various ways to connect and hear about what is happening island-wide. There are Facebook groups, Telegram groups and email chains. Word-of-mouth is also a popular way of spreading news on the island.

Island-Wide Events
Even though the island is a small province, it is still a long distance tip-to-tip to travel regularly. For that reason, most ongoing activities are separated by the three counties: Prince, Queens, and Kings. However, there are a few times throughout the year that the large group of island homeschoolers come together in one place. It is encouraging to see the vast number of home educating families in one place as well as kids of all ages running around and enjoying time with their friends. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of homeschoolers in PEI has approximately tripled!
Not-Back-to-School Picnic
This takes place every September around the time that the public schools start up again. It is held at a centrally located provincial park with a beach. Families can bring resources to sell or give away if they wish. Everyone brings a packed lunch and a dessert to share and spreads out with blankets or chairs. Kids run around in the field playing games and utilise the playground.
At some point during the morning, everyone is called to gather in one place while the organizer shares announcements, points out veteran homeschoolers who are around to help, passes out a slip of paper with the Facebook groups on it, and allows others to announce any necessary information. A large group picture is also taken.
This is a really fun way to kick off another year of homeschooling and see everyone again after a summer break.
Winter Ski Day
During the winter, there is an organized ski day at Mark Arendz Ski Park with lessons for those who need them. This is an event any homeschooler on PEI can sign up for. It is located in central PEI and is a fun homeschool community gathering.
End of Year Sandspit Day
Just as we start the year together at a picnic, we end it together at Sandspit. This is another fun day for the kids. Parents pay for their own family’s admission for the day and we take over this local amusement park. Moms and dads set up picnic blankets around the park and enjoy visiting with other adults and watching the kids play with friends at this wonderful celebration to mark the end of the school year.
Regularly Scheduled Activities
Weekly Skates – All Counties
All around the island there are groups of homeschoolers meeting throughout the week to skate. There are more than are even mentioned here so ask around and check the calendar on Telegram.
- Wednesdays 9–11 a.m. at the Credit Union Place in Summerside (Prince County)
- Tuesday mornings at the APM centre in Cornwall (Queens County)
Sports Club – Queens County
This club meets during the fall and spring on Thursday afternoons to participate in various sport activities. All school-age kids are welcome. During the winter, it switches to a basketball club.
Homeschool Library Days – Kings County
Valleyfield Homeschool Library is located in the eastern end of the island. It is open by appointment to homeschoolers from anywhere on the island and as an open house during the once-a-month library days. Co-ops and Groups
Classical Conversations – Summerside (Prince County)
Classical Conversations, which meets on Tuesdays, is a classical homeschool community for kids age four all the way through high school. With communities all across Canada and the US, Classical Conversations PEI is a newer community that began in 2024. If you are looking for a faith-filled community to homeschool your children which focuses on classical education including logic, debate, classical books, and so much more, then a CC community just may be the right fit for you.
We meet one day a week and parents and students homeschool together. Kids and parents find community and support while very much in charge of the education for their families. If you want to educate your children with a solid faith-filled classical education and with other Christian families also pursuing the same, then come check us out.

Eastern PEI Forest School – Kings County
This is a free forest school where students and parents go for walks, play in the woods, and make fires. On cold or rainy days, they do indoor nature crafts. In the spring, gardens will be planted and can continue over the summer to tend those gardens. This group meets biweekly.

Prince County Nature Studies
This free nature school meets biweekly on Thursday afternoons to learn basic survival skills such as fire starting, cooking over a fire, shelter building, using a compass, and identifying plants. This group meets year-round, regardless of weather. Kids are able to earn badges for the skills they learn. New members are always welcome.
West Prince Homeschool Connect – Prince County
West Prince Homeschool Connect is a weekly homeschool meet-up that happens every Tuesday from 2–4 p.m. Enjoy coffee, snacks, gym play, games, crafts, and connection in a relaxation setting.
