Homeschooling with Other Children in School

We fully support your parental choice to homeschool only some of your children. However, we want you to be aware that homeschooling some children while having a child or children in school may increase the chances of an investigation. Reports from school staff are among the most common sources of CAS investigations. 

Remember that educators are obligated by law to report neglect and any suspected emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. 

Things to Consider . . .

When School Staff Is Unsupportive  

Educators do not always understand homeschooling and can sometimes seem unsupportive of you homeschooling your other children. They may be more inclined to search for concerns, misinterpret innocent comments, or assign harm where there is none.

Proactive Plan

• Work to establish good rapport with teachers and school officials.
• Communicate carefully and with respect; be gracious.
• Have age-appropriate conversations with your school child about being mindful at school.

When There Is Relational Conflict Between You and Your Child

If your school child is going through a difficult time or struggling in their relationship with you, this can carry over into their school life. Discussions with teachers about home grievances, and displays of anger, aggression, or depression are often reasons for school interventions or CAS complaints.
