HSLDA is coming to Alberta
Quite obviously, this has been an alarming week for homeschoolers in Alberta. Details are still emerging and getting clearer as the week continues. The HSLDA Canada office is actively engaged with the WISDOM/Trinity situation and is pursuing the best ways to serve Albertan homeschool families.
As such, HSLDA, in cooperation with Patty Marler of AHEA, will be holding information and discussion meetings in Alberta this coming week. Lisa McManus, Legal Counsel for HSLDA, and Ray Strom, HSLDA Board member, will be present to meet with any homeschooling families in Alberta who can attend these events.
There will be two information and discussion sessions:
Monday, October 31 at 7pm in Calgary
Coast Plaza Hotel & Conference Centre
1316 33rd Street N.E.
Tuesday, November 1 at 7pm in Edmonton
Chateau Louis Hotel & Conference Centre
These will be private meetings with no media present, and so, to that end, we ask you to not record the sessions. We will be sharing what information we can, as well as giving homeschoolers a chance to share their feelings and concerns in this matter.
As you might expect, the HSLDA phones have been ringing off the hook and the online memberships are flooding in. We understand that your questions are weighing heavy on your mind, and we understand that you need timely responses. Please be patient as we attend to all of the requests and needs that are coming into the office. In order to serve you well, we have brought in extra staff to help to process membership applications so that you get the coverage you need as soon as possible.
In fact, HSLDA is temporarily changing our membership policy in light of this current crisis in order to get you the help you need as quickly as possible. Normally, HSLDA is unable to offer full legal services to families who apply for membership after a legal issue has begun. However, given the unique and wide-spread nature of this issue, we are making an exception and are extending full legal coverage and membership to any homeschool family in Alberta who have no additional legal issues. Also, as mentioned above, we have brought in extra staff to shorten the application processing time. As a result, for this week only (October 31- November 4) families who want to join HSLDA will be able to do so on an expedited basis.
The two-step application process is as follows:
- Visit hslda.ca/membership-renewal-forms/ to fill out the application form.
- Call the HSLDA office with your credit card number. (Paying for your membership annually rather than monthly is a quicker processing method.)
Even though it may still take some time for your membership package to arrive in the mail, we will honour your membership as being active as soon as payment is received. Please feel free to share this information with families in your homeschool circle who may not be receiving updates from HSLDA Canada.
Lastly, rest assured that HSLDA is working with all the parties involved in these recent developments in Alberta. We are here to serve you and to ensure that your rights to homeschool are uninterrupted.
